This pocket edition reproduces the work designed by Marie-Claude Char and Françoise Marquet from the original manuscript by René Char illuminated by Zao Wou-Ki, kept at the National Library of France.

Throughout his career, Zao Wou-Ki merged Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions in his work, retaining technical elements of Chinese painting styles while embracing European Modernism. Published in 2007 by Bernard Dumerchez, Paris, the Le jardin d'encre portfolio, whose title translates to The Ink Garden, demonstratesº Zao's use of free-flowing brushstrokes, which incorporate elements of traditional Chinese calligraphy, to contemplate nature. 

The eight inks created by Zao Wou-Ki in 2006 were sources of poetic inspiration for Dominique de ViLlepin who composed this collection Words picked in a garden of friendship. His poetry transports us to a garden of memories where Chinese lands mingle with the memories of the artist's Parisian studio.
